Über das Buch

As the wife of a successful attorney, Helen Toussaint appears to lead the perfect life. Young and attractive, she shares a beautiful home with her husband Nick and their two small children. But when Nick Toussaint successfully defends Ahmed Al Shain – a shadowy Arab businessman and alleged financier of a terror network – her life changes overnight. After the grueling trial, the family takes a holiday at the estate of the senior head of the Benninger firm, where Nick works. There Helen, a sensitive soul, encounters a patient of Robert Benninger, a psychiatrist and the elder son of the firm’s owner. The young woman suffers from a psychosis marked by obsessive thoughts and delusions, and casts a spell over Helen. Triggered by the strain of recent weeks, Helen slips ever deeper into a distorted, unreal world.
When, during the stay, Nick terminates his collaboration with Al Shain, the latter sends a very young beauty after him – and she seduces the family man. Helen learns of the affair through compromising video footage and kills the girl in a frenzy of delusions, pills, and alcohol. Now there is no turning back. After Nick, too, disappears, she comes under mounting pressure – from the police and from Al Shain, who is again demanding access to secret accounts and explosive data. Together with Robert, she tries to find a way out. But the situation grows ever more tangled.
Helen’s delusions and compulsions intensify; she hallucinates and is haunted by a series of apparitions. One night her husband Nick resurfaces. He knows that Helen brutally killed his young lover. She feels her life slipping further and further from her grasp. Fearing that her husband will betray her, Helen devises a diabolical plan.
Together with Gabriel – a young loner who runs a gas station and whom she had met in a village not far from the estate – she murders Nick. When Al Shain finally abducts the children, Robert reveals his past with the CIA and reactivates old networks.
